What is this test?

A blood sample is taken to measure the amount of lead in your child’s blood. It can find out whether your child has been exposed to lead. Blood samples may be collected by a finger prick. Young children are at higher risk for lead poisoning because they often put objects in their mouths. Some things, such as paint, dirt and water, may contain lead. There are no safe lead levels for children.

Who needs this test?

All children during the year they turn 1 year old.

TIP: Children can have this test at their checkup — no need to schedule a separate visit.
