Save Money on Outpatient Surgery

Save Money on Outpatient Surgery

EHP is always looking for ways to help our members save money and have the best care experience possible. So when members need outpatient surgical care, we recommend using one of the many Ambulatory Surgical Centers (ASCs) in our network. ASCs can cost up to 60% less than hospitals for the same procedure! And ASCs offer the advantages of greater convenience and personalized care, lower risk of infections and higher patient satisfaction.

While more complicated procedures cannot be performed in an ASC, there are advantages for those procedures that can be done there:

  • You avoid a hospital stay and get to recover in the comfort and privacy of your own home.
  • You receive high-quality care at far less cost than at a hospital.
  • Operations are more likely to be on schedule.
  • Complications are rare — if they do occur, ASCs have backup plans for transferring patients to a hospital.

If surgery is in your future, ask your health care provider if outpatient surgery is an option. Improved technology, pain control and less-invasive procedures allow many surgeries to be done in an ASC. Common outpatient procedures include:

  • Tonsillectomy
  • Hernia repair
  • Laparoscopic gallbladder removal
  • Some kinds of cosmetic surgery
  • Cataract surgery
  • Mole removal
  • Arthroscopy (doctor looks inside a joint using a special camera)

Serious, life-threatening injuries or conditions are medical emergencies and should be treated in a hospital emergency care setting. For less urgent problems, be sure to check that the facility you choose is in-network. Go to ehp.org/find-a-provider.
